Protecting Your Pets: 3 Disaster Preparedness Tips

by Dee Higgins 04/03/2023

Emergencies come in all forms, but the best thing you can do is prepare for them. This also includes preparing for the safety of your pets in case of a disaster. There are some simple steps you can take to gain peace of mind and the best possible outcome if you encounter a natural disaster. Here are some disaster preparedness tips for your pets:

Use Rescue Alert Stickers

Rescue alert stickers are used to tell people how many and what type of pets are in your home. This is incredibly important in case of emergency because it can tell rescue workers and emergency services that you have pets to evacuate or rescue. Simply mark the number and types of pets you have at home (for example, 2 cats and 1 dog) and keep it updated as needed. This can help keep your pets safe in all kinds of emergencies, from gas leaks to hurricanes.

Arrange Temporary Shelter

It's important to arrange in advance for a safe place to take your pets if they cannot stay at home or with you. Determine where you plan to take your pets ahead of time and make a note of their contact information. You can ask your vet if they have a list of preferred kennels, and inquire at your local animal shelter to see if they provide emergency shelter. Another great tip is to look up some nearby hotels or motels that accept pets.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Just like humans, pets can benefit from having an emergency preparedness kit. Include things to take care of basic needs like water, food, medications and whatever you need for waste management. Your kit should also include a pet first-aid kit and an extra leash or carrier. Try to set aside enough supplies to last at least three days in case of an emergency. To help your pets stay calm and comfortable during a disaster, it's also a good idea to include a toy or blanket in your emergency kit.

Nobody likes to think about the possibility of a natural disaster, but it's crucial to have a plan. Include your pets in your emergency planning with these tips and you'll be able to keep them safe and secure.
